How to Choose the Perfect Location for Your Next Photoshoot!
I think it’s safe to say that choosing a location for your photoshoot is one of the most stressful things in the whole process (next to choosing outfits for the whole family!) I have something very exciting in the works to help you determine your ideal location for your next session, but in the meantime, I want to share 5 tips on choosing the perfect location for your next photoshoot!
CONSIDER THE “VIBE” OF YOUR SESSION
Are you looking for a more laid-back session or are you looking for something a bit more formal? The location of your photoshoot can drastically impact the feel of your session! For example, a studio or urban location can provide a more formal feel, whereas a field or mountain location can provide a more laid-back feel. One thing I love about garden-type locations is they can go either way! Don’t forget that the outfits you choose help play a huge part in this as well!
CHOOSE SOMEPLACE MEANINGFUL
Going someplace meaningful to you and your family is a wonderful way to preserve this time in your life! Not only will you have photos at a location you love, you’ll instantly feel more comfortable in front of the camera! If you’re having a hard time thinking of a meaningful place, think about the places you frequent, the places that bring your joy when you visit them, and even you’re happy place!
LOOK FOR VARIETY
To get the most out of my time with my clients, I look for locations within a location to help provide the most variety! A perfect example of this is Exchange Place in Downtown Salt Lake. Within a block’s radius there is a brick wall, several different types of architecture, a city park, and a few other locations! Finding a place like this will help you maximize your time with your photographer!
ASK FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER’S FAVORITES
Most photographers have locations that they absolutely love to photograph at. I know for me personally, I have a variety of locations I can recommend to help meet any vibe you might be going for! You can also look at their previous sessions to see if they have any locations in their portfolio that stand out to you!
IS THE LOCATION PUBLIC OR PRIVATE?
Depending on if the location is public or private will help determine if you need a permit to have your photoshoot there. If it is a private location you will need permission to shoot at the location at the very least, if not a permit for that location. With most public locations, there’s no permit needed! You can find out if the location you have in mind is public or private and any information on any permits you might need on the locations website.
I hope this helped you figure out your perfect location for your next photoshoot! If you’d like for me to capture your memories, I’d love for you to contact me HERE!
