It seems only fitting that my first location guide is on Exchange Place in Downtown Salt Lake. This was one of the first locations I did a photoshoot at and instantly fell in love. It’s so versatile! Off the top of my head, I’m able to count 7 different areas that make the perfect backdrop for an urban photoshoot in Downtown Salt Lake making this the perfect location for most anyone.
Information on Exchange Place
Exchange Place is quite literally a street in Downtown Salt Lake comprised of various businesses and historic buildings. You can read more about the history of Exchange Place on the slc.gov website! I’ve found the best way to navigate to this location is by searching for the Old Salt Lake Stock Exchange. You can choose to park on the street if there is a spot available, or you can park in the parking garage just east (or to the right) of the Old Stock Exchange building. Typically parking in the garage is $5 per vehicle.
Pros About This Location
The possibilities are endless. Not only does this street provide a wide variety options, this location is within walking distance of several other popular downtown locations like the Gallivan Plaza and Washington Square Park!
Food. If you (or your clients) are looking to grab a bite to each before/after your session there are endless options in the area. Whether you’re in the mood for pizza, Indian food, Mediterranean food, or a good ole burger you can find something in the area.
You’re able to shoot here most any time of day! With the exception of the late morning, the surrounding buildings create enough of a shadow to provide even lighting across the street.
Things to Consider About This Location
Traffic. Because this is a literal street, albeit not highly trafficked, you will need to watch for thru traffic if you decide to use one of the crosswalks, shoot in the street, or step into the street for a better angle.
Events. This location is pretty central to a lot of the event centers downtown meaning you may have to worry about paying for event parking depending on what’s going on. You may also see quite a few more people in the area than usual due to the proximity to restaurants and bars in the area.
Surrounding businesses. If you’re shooting here during business hours make sure you’re considerate to the surrounding businesses and not interfering with their business operations.

INSIDER TIPS
Send your client a pin (linked here!) to make sure they get to the right garage. If you search for the Exchange Place Parking Garage it will take you to a parking garage that isn’t accessible to the public.
Shoot there on Sundays, you’re able to park in the garage for free! Saving both you and your client some money.
The top of the parking garage provides a FABULOUS vantage point for Urban Sunset photos.
