Mini v Full Session: Which is Best for You & Your Family?

Updated: Feb 16

As fall and the holiday season approaches many photographers start advertising for their mini sessions to wrap up the year and you may be wondering to yourself…

  • What is a mini session?

  • What's the difference between a mini and full length session?

  • Which is better for me and my family?

  • Should I book a mini session?

Let's chat all about the difference between mini and full length sessions and answer those questions below!

What is a Mini Session?

A mini session is typically 15-20 minutes in length and will have 3-5 images included. They’re typically themed around the season, an upcoming holiday, or even a fun theme the photographer has come up with!

What is a Full Length Session?

This will vary a lot more from photographer to photographer, however, a full-length session is typically a minimum of 45 minutes long and includes anywhere from 10 images to the full gallery! With a full length session, you will typically have the ability to pick the session location and some photographers will give you the option of multiple outfits depending on the length of your session.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Booking

Before booking either a mini or full session there are some questions to ask yourself to help determine which is best for you and your family!

What type of session am I looking for?

For things like newborn sessions and wedding photos, more time will need to be dedicated to your session than the typical length of a mini session allows for. Mini sessions are ideal for family photos, announcements, best friend sessions, and even maternity photos!

How many photos would I like?

If you’re looking for a gallery that tells a complete story (like an engagement or newborn session) a full-length is better suited for your needs where you’ll receive more photos with your package. If you’re wanting a few photos to commemorate the holiday or announce something fun to your family a mini session will be perfect (most photographers will give you the option to purchase the full gallery from your mini session as well!)

Do I like the theme?

This one’s a bit obvious, but I couldn’t not include it! If the theme of the session doesn’t suit your fancy it’s not worth booking; There will most likely be a theme up your alley at a later date! If you love the photographer's work and aren’t interested in the theme I highly recommend reaching out to them to be added to their email list or book a full session!

Should I Book a Mini Session? Or a Full Session?

Now to address the ultimate question from this post, which to book? This is obviously a question only you can answer, but I hope this post provided some clarity in making your decision! Considering the theme of the session, how many photos you would like to have, and more will help you determine not only if you should book this specific mini session or a mini session in the future!
